Whimsical Garden Toddler Bedroom

If I have a chance to decorate a room, I add a little garden touch to the space. When my daughter was ready for a big girl bed I knew this was my chance to spruce up the room a little bit. Being a garden lover, I thought I would bring the garden charm into the room with a whimsical feel. How was I going to bring in a few things to make it special? Given she will be playing in the room more now I thought a reading nook and easy access to books would be perfect along with her dollhouse. Ideas were flowing through my head and I decided to add a canopy, cute garden animal prints and a felt flower bouquet to name a few.

A big priority for the room was health and purchasing non-toxic items. Bedding is the number one way we can make a room healthier especially for children. Our skin absorbs the fabric all night, it is important to have natural materials. We purchased a double organic kids mattress from Obasan. Handcrafted in Canada from GOTS and GOLS certified organic latex, cotton and wool. When you take it out of the box there is NO smell. There are no off-gassing, no chemicals, no flame retardants and no synthetic foams.

I added an organic wool protector which repels water and protects the mattress from any accidents. The comforter is a medium weight pure organic wool comforter making it very breathable and comfortable. Lastly, the organic latex cotton pillow to support her head. I have purchased many Obasan products the last few years and they are truly the most beautiful and ethical bedding I have tried.

The natural oak wood bed brings the perfect natural look and feel to the room. The spindles bring a charm to the space that elevates the look and it is lower to the ground making it easy for her to climb in and out. I also invested in a double bed straight from the crib so she can use this bed until her teens.

The sheets are Coyuchi sheets, my absolute favourite organic sheets. I purchased from a local store in Canada called Resthouse but if you live in the US, you can buy directly from Coyuchi. The colour is stunning, called Hazel Chambray, a lovely neutral that works well with the light pink canopy.

A rug is the heart of the room and this rug makes it all come together. It is also another area to be mindful of toxins. Purchasing organic or non toxic rugs is an investment but it should last a lifestyle if taken care of properly. I choose wool rugs for the bedrooms as it is a purchase for life! This rug was purchased from a local Vancouver company Rugs by Roo and it reminds me of garden beds and it brings the pops of blues and greens together in the room.  I also already had the veggie pouf, cloud pillow, veggies basket and daisy basket in her side table. All neutral garden theme items to make it cozy.

A few other details:

· Canopy: 100% linen. This was an investment I hope can be passed down and used for a very long time. Choosing all natural materials for the products in the room was a journey and it took me over 6 months to accumulate items one purchase at a time. We put her crib mattress on the ground and added pillows and a blanket we already had to make the reading nook cozy.

· Felt Flowers: These are from Fiber and Form Felt including peony, hydrangea, rose, daisies, baby’s breath, eucalyptus and wildflowers! The vase was thrifted and it’s just perfect.

· Pea Art: This adorable pea pod art print is from Opposite Wall! I also recently created not one, not two, but three garden planners with them! Check out the collection here!

· Veggie Prints: Unfortunately, these exact ones are no longer being sold, but here is a similar set of digital prints of herbs that I found from Etsy!

· Items from Modern Baby: There are a few items from Modern Baby in Olivia’s room, including this rainbow hanging for her hair clips, the Cuddle & Kind dolls, the felt bunnies, floral jewelry box and the Maileg dollhouse with a few items inside.

· Hook: We got this hook for her purses from Liv Can Design.

· Bunny Backpack: is from Thistle and Wren.

  • The bookshelves we already had from her room and reused.

· Side Table: We got this adorable side table from Walmart a few years ago.

· Daisy Basket: This adorable basket is from Pehr, however they’re not currently selling this one, but have tons of other options!

I had so much fun decorating this whimsy garden room and I hope I can inspire you to take your time with your home to create intentional living spaces. Living slowly, through the seasons and making one sustainable purchase at a time is the goal.
