Throwing a Farmer’s Market Themed Party!

Have you ever considering throwing a farmer’s market themed party before? If not, consider this your sign to! When coming up with a theme for my daughter’s birthday party, we wanted it to feel true to us, while celebrating her big day. Enter – the farmer’s market! I love that this is an opportunity to incorporate locally grown items including baked goods, produce, flowers and decor; plus it’s a great opportunity to consider what’s in-season, therefore making it a sustainable option as well!

Flowers, flowers, flowers!

Consider purchasing local flowers! Dahlias are an absolute show stopper, and come in tons of colours, shapes & sizes, but depending on the time of the year, look around at the farmer’s market to see what’s in season, or ask a flower farmer. This is a great way to support a local farm or grow them yourself! If you want to lean into the flower theme, you can also add cute cookies featuring flower designs and use seed packets as decor.

On top of the the cake & cupcakes, this is a great opportunity to use a combination of different fresh flowers as decor. Baking or buying a simple white cake, and placing organically grown flowers like calendula, strawflower, pansies and/or zinnias can really tie the theme together. However, always ensure that the flowers are grown without the use of chemicals!

Decorations & Food

Using flowers is something that may instantly come to mind, but have you considered incorporating food into the overall decor too? Nothing says “farmers market” quite like a combination of fresh, locally grown flowers and food if you ask me! When decorating your table for your party, use homegrown produce, or if possible, head to a local farmers market or farm to purchase food to decorate with. If you’re worried about not being able to use all of your produce before it expires, consider sending some home with your guests as a thank you for attending!

Serve fresh veggies, fruit & farmers market themed desserts. Using a combination of different sizes, colours, and textures of vegetables & fruit adds tons of colour & fits the theme well. Plus, if you’re purchasing from a local farm, this supports your local economy and ensures you’re purchasing in-season produce!

To tie everything together, add things that you probably already have around your home such as crates, canned goods, a watering can, a crock, vase(s), terracotta pots, colanders and more! If you happen to have a reusable sign on hand, putting together a simple on-theme sign such as “Welcome to the Farmer’s Market”, or “Happily Grown, Locally Produced” can really tie together the overall look.

Drinks

When it comes to serving drinks, I think it’s important to have a variety of options! Setting up a mimosa bar with grapefruit juice & orange juice is one of my go-to’s, but you can also consider checking out a local brewery or winery, picking up some apple cider (alcoholic or not – or maybe both?!), an arrangement of juices, or create a signature drink such as a basil-strawberry mocktail (or cocktail!) made from locally grown produce!

So, will you be throwing a farmer’s market themed party any time soon? Let me know in the comments below! I have to say, I think this is one of my favourite party themes I’ve ever done before, and I hope you love it as much as I do.
