How to Throw a Bunnies & Blooms Themed Party

It’s that time of year again – my daughter’s birthday! Every year always feels like it flashes by, but I have to admit, coming up with a new party theme for my kids birthday parties is always such a fun part of them getting older. This year, we ended up going with a Bunnies & Blooms theme, and it turned out absolutely adorable. I love that the theme is super easy to execute with things we already have in our home, and if you ask me, is a perfect spring-to-early-fall party theme too! You can also keep this super low waste, which is our number one goal (aside from everyone having tons of fun!), and since we use so much of what we already have, it’s a very cost-effective theme as well. Here’s a few details about the theme & how you can throw a Bunnies & Blooms party as well!

Bunnies: Grab some bunny stuffies, figurines, or even a t-shirt and books that you already have in your home. I find every child has something with a bunny on it. If not, borrow some bunny accessories from friends or family! I loved adding a couple of books to the table, and we even added a few knitted bunnies that grandma made, which made the overall display so special. If you don’t have any stuffed bunnies, and want to get some, I love the cuddle and kind dolls and they make a great heirloom gift. Adding the bunnies to a wicker basket looks great and displays the bunnies beautifully!

Sign: Make an easy sign with paper on a board, reuse a frame and add a litle blurb or use a chalkboard. I had this pin board that I just coloured a quick “Bunnies & Blooms” on it with the kids pencil crayons.

Blooms: Depending on when your party is happening, you could find all sorts of in-season flowers to use in your display. In the springtime, you can use daffodils and tulips, in late spring/early summer, you can use peonies and ranunculus. Late summer/early fall some great options include dahlias, zinnias, cosmos and sunflowers (like we did). Keeping it a whimsical, yet colourful with flowers creates an elegance to the party, and my favourite way to display them is with my vases or crocks from Farmhouse Pottery.

Colours: Choose some colours that work with your accessories or that are in season! Yellows and purples look great together, or pastel and pinks with pops of yellow. Choosing a palette with more blue can make it feel like there is a nod to Peter Rabbit in the theme as well.

Wall Hanging: Create a simple DIY wall hanging instead of using balloons! We do love our reusable fabric balloon from Fancy Little Day that we put up every year, but if you don’t have a reusable option, choosing to say no to balloons is best for the planet, and it’s a decision I made to stop using when I had our first child. It’s amazing what a little natural decor can do! For the wall hanging, I used strawflowers (they are amazing to grow and dry), bunny tails (I grew these from seed), and sage. Add other herbs and flowers to the mix and make it simple with twine!

Food: I tend to have a lot of fruit and veggies as the bunnies love it! If you really want to lean into the bunny theme, I highly recommend making a carrot dish if you have time (ex. carrot cake, maple carrots, etc.) We tend to add some bulk chips and popcorn as well, since who doesn’t love that?

Dessert: Mini sugar donuts, powder donuts and macarons were a fun dessert for the table and looked super pretty. You can also add a simple cake with edible flowers on it if you are serving a cake (ensure they aren’t sprayed with pesticides before decorating!). Sugar cookies are always a favourite in our home, and we get ours from a local baker who can make bunny and floral designs on them with royal icing.

Serving: Finger foods are the best, in my opinion, because it means you don’t have to buy or use cutlery. If finger foods aren’t your preferred foods to serve, or you just need to have plates & cutlery, use compostable paper products that can be easily composted or invest in plates you use year after year. Additionally, using compostable paper napkins or reusable fabric napkins if you’re up for laundry for folks to wipe their hands with won’t go unnoticed. Again, think low waste, use what you have!

I hope you enjoyed reading about how we created this adorable Bunnies & Blooms themed party for our daughter’s birthday this year! Let me know in the comments if you plan to throw a party with this theme!
