How to Throw a Citrus-Themed Party

What says summer more than all things citrus? If you ask me – nothing! Whether you’re hosting a birthday party, a bridal shower, or just wanting to entertain friends & family this summer, why not make your party citrus-themed? It’s a fun, summery and all-natural way to add some seasonal flair and colour multiple areas of your party, including food and decor.

I think this has to be one of my favourite themes I’ve done before because the liveliness of the colours (and smells!) was just so fun! Some of the decor featured for this party, such as the dried citrus garland, I made myself (read my blog on how to dry citrus here), and I love that I can store it in an air-tight container and re-use it for years to come, making it a sustainable and easy decor piece for parties & holidays. Since we love to dehydrate fruit, veggies and herbs, we’ve got a 16-tray dehydrator from Commercial Dehydrators and highly recommend it for anyone who also wants to dehydrate food as well. Use code PURPOSEFUL10 for 10% off your purchase!

We incorporated citrus in more than just the decor though – of course, we had to feature it in throughout our food & drinks, and I have to give a huge shoutout to the citrus-themed charcuterie created by Spoon and Spade! Check them out if you’re on Vancouver Island for all of your charcuterie needs.

Food & Drink ideas

If you’re looking for some fun food and drink ideas to add to the citrus-theme, consider the following options:

  • Boiled Eggs (Cut in half, the orange yolks compliment the orange of the citrus!)

  • Cheese Boards

  • Baguette

  • Bagel Board with various spreads

  • Waffles

  • Fruit

  • Sliced citrus (orange, grapefruit, lemon, lime, blood orange)

  • Simple cake with sliced citrus as garnish/decoration

  • Citrus juices

  • Mimosa bar

  • Citrus sodas

  • Aperol spritz

  • Water with sliced citrus

Decorations

For decor, I love to use as many natural and non-disposable items as possible! In addition to the homemade dried citrus garland, I highly recommend purchasing locally grown flowers (if you’re in Victoria, I can’t recommend Busy Bee Farm & Florals more!) to put in vases throughout the space, candles of different shapes & sizes (I got mine from Little Mill), wooden cutting boards for serving & various re-usable linens such as table runners & napkins. For plates & cutlery, I used my regular day-to-day pieces to keep this party as low-waste as possible.

I hope this sparked some ideas of how to have an eco-friendly, citrus-themed party! Let me know in the comments below if you plan to throw a party themed with citrus, or if you’ve got any additional tips.
