Our Primary Bedroom Reveal!

Guess what… It’s finally here! After months of hard work, finding the perfect pieces and getting the room completely set up – our primary bedroom is finally ready to be revealed, and I’m so excited to share all of the details with you in today’s blog.

The goal in our primary bedroom was to create a calm, cozy, relaxing space, using as many sustainable and natural materials as possible. Ultimately, we wanted a space that was minimal, where everything had its place within the room (no extra noise!) while incorporating some Pacific Northwest vibes by bringing nature & the ocean indoors. I feel like we have done a great job incorporating all of these elements while keeping it true to our style.

Creating a healthy bedroom may seem like a daunting task – everywhere we look, there’s products made with toxic chemicals and materials, and it feels like it’s impossible to find furniture & home decor items that don’t contain these harmful substances. But, I promise that there are products and companies out there that offer beautiful pieces, free from these chemicals, without compromising a high-quality build.

Bedframe & Side Tables

When considering where we wanted to get our furniture from, one of the first places that came to mind is The Cross Design, based in Vancouver. Ultimately, we ended up getting our bed frame from them! This item, the Katharine Bed is made locally right in Vancouver, using high-quality materials hand-selected by the creative director. Plus, you can pick from a ton of colours & textures! Another item that we carefully selected was our bedside tables. We ended up choosing the Baja White Oak Wood Nightstands from Crate & Barrel as they are made from FSC ®-certified wood, meaning the wood has been sourced from forests that are managed in a way to be as environmentally-friendly as possible.

Mattress & Bedding

When it comes to creating a healthy bedroom, you of course cannot forget the importance of the items you actually sleep on. We’ve been huge fans of Obasan* for years, and I couldn’t imagine sleeping on another mattress (or pillow) at this point. Their mattresses are all made in Canada, right in their warehouse & feature organic, ethically-sourced materials; they create products that are not only comfortable, but you can feel good about! In our bedroom, we have their King Mattress, Wool Mattress Topper, Organic Latex Rubber Pillows and their Medium Weight Comforter.

In addition to a mattress, pillows & comforter, it’s also important to consider the quality & materials of the sheets you’re sleeping on! My personal favourite have been these gorgeous Organic Percale Sheets in the colour Alpine White from Coyuchi, as well as the duvet set in their newly released coastal colour, Pacific Blue. The sheets are soft, and I sleep soundly knowing they’re made from organic materials – plus, this shade of blue on the duvet cover is the perfect nod to the Pacific Northwest vibes we were going for. Lastly we added the Cozy Cotton Organic Blanket in Alpine white from Coyuchi.

Lighting

Choosing lighting was something I needed help with, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. We received help from Tara Hurst Design and the wonderful staff at Lighthouse Co in Canada. The beautiful yet simple black chandelier brought in the black element we love. The feeling of candlelight during the day and night brings a cozy vibe. We went out of our comfort zone and incoporated brass into the mix.

Beside our bed, on each side we added a Laken Medium Articulating Wall Lights. The hand-rubbed antique brass and natural rattan sconces bring an elegance we didn’t know was possible. We opted for this to keep our bedside tables clear, leaving more room to add a glass of water at night, my fav book and of course, a vase filled with garden flowers!

Rug + Curtains

A healthy rug was a priority and we never thought we would do white but here we are. The rug is a 100% wool rug and the foundation of the room. We step on our rug daily, having a non-toxic rug feels good in so many ways. Another way to create a healthier bedroom is linen curtains. We supported a locally owned and operated company here in Victoria BC called Ruffell & Brown. We did custom window coverings and they really do make a room feel like a room. It was 100% worth it! We have a large sliding glass doors where we added curtains to. The wood rod and brass fitting ties in nicely with the brass sconces. We also added roman shades for the windows on either side of the bed.

Accessories

A few final touches were the woven bench that really brings in the nature-inspired palette and the black legs tie in with the chandelier. The art featured above our bed is from a local artist, Joy Kinna, who is from Vancouver, B.C.! On the bedside tables I love fresh flowers from the garden. If you want a simple way to bring the outdoors in, grow some flowers in your garden (or in a container!) using organic soil, and keep it free from chemical sprays!

Paint Colours

When considering the paint colours for our space, I wanted it to be neutral, but inviting. We ended up choosing Simply White by Benjamin Moore for our walls, and (potentially unpopular opinion ahead…), Swiss Coffee by Benjamin Moore for the ceilings & beams. They’re the perfect neutral, almost-white colours that feel inviting, cozy & warm.

It’s been a long time coming, and tons of thoughtful decisions went into this space, but I am so content with the relaxation and peace it brings me at the end of each day! I hope this has inspired you to bring more sustainable and nature-inspired materials into your home one step at a time.
