Neutral Eco-Friendly Garden Nursery

The time has come to reveal our eco-friendly garden themed nursery. I’m so excited to share photos, the companies we trust and my favourite detail of the whole room! All products are linked below so you can shop the look.

My goal is to ensure everything is practical, minimal, beautiful, non toxic, sustainable and of course, eco-friendly. I have had the items in the room for quite a while now to ensure I love them, they are comfortable (like the rug!) and I feel confident sharing the details with all of you.

If you’ve been following The Purposeful You for a while, you know our family loves to garden. We thought it would be extra special to have a garden themed nursery to embrace our family lifestyle and values. It’s neutral and simple. After all, it’s our little rainbow baby and without sun and rain we have no garden.

What does an eco-friendly nursery even mean? To me, it means a little used and a little new with a focus on sustainability. Anything used means it will be loved again and it didn’t have to be manufactured or end up in the landfill. I love reusing items from my first born, hammy downs from family & friends or a good marketplace find. The used items in the room are the dresser (from Ikea), the recliner chair (we used this for Quinn and loved it), side table and my favourite, the crib. Why the crib? My dad made it for me! It has been used by my myself, my brother, a few cousins, our son and now our new baby. Don’t worry, we have modified and tested it to make sure it’s safe!

Everything new in the nursery is non-toxic, made with natural materials, ethically made, bought locally or made by hand to support artisans around the world. It took a few months to source it all so there’s many links for you below.

A large purchase and big decision for any nursery is the rug! I researched many companies that carry ethically made + non-toxic rugs. A rug can be the most toxic item in a room! I’m so happy I found Rugs by Roo located in Vancouver, Sandy the owner is a mom herself and she was wonderful to work with. She focuses on bringing in brands that are good for the environment and people. No nasty materials, chemicals, sprays or glues plus ethically made ensuring fare wages. Guess what? This rug is machine washable too! Knowing it’s made with 100% cotton, I can feel good about putting it in the washing machine. The rug we chose is called air dune white by Lorena Canals. We went for the largest size to fit the entire 8x11 room. Two other accessories that went well with the garden theme are the vegetable pouf (also a tik tac toe game) and a vegetable storage basket for toys or stuffed animals. The sleeping area is one of the most important areas to focus on when it comes to a babies health. Non-toxic materials & manufacturing is very important and an area we were willing to spend more money on. The crib mattress was a gift from my dad but we highly recommend an Obasan mattress. Quinn has their double and it’s wonderful. The organic rubber toddler pillow (you can engrave their name, see our baby name in the photo below!) and the organic wool mattress protector are the other two items we have in the crib from Obasan. The crib sheet is 100% cotton from a local store called Momease Baby Boutique and I love the sun design to tie into the garden theme.

My absolute favourite part of the nursery…Well besides the stunning vegetable art, is the handwoven changing basket by Design Dua with vegan grass handles. It makes the room pop and ties in the warmth of the maple crib. I focused on a completely natural changing basket this time with an organic liner & waterproof sheet. I have three waterproof sheets as I know I’ll have to wash them many times. From experience, we change up to 15 diapers a day and I found myself spending a lot of time on the change pad with my first born just hanging out, making faces and trying to get them to smile. Having materials that are healthy so close to their skin was very important to me. Once the baby grows out of the bassinet, I can use the basket for storage and have the baby on the dresser on the mattress only. I added a mini daisy storage basket from Pehr on the dresser to store diapers and cream for easy access. We will be doing a hybrid of cloth and disposable diapers at the beginning.

Do I still have you?? Thanks for making it this far in the blog. I knew this one would be a long one as I had so many tips and products to share. Also, if you looked hard at the pillow in the crib you’ll see our babies name is Olivia, we will call her olive!
