My 10 Must-Have Gardening Tools & Supplies
It’s no secret that there are tons of gardening tools and supplies out there, and it can be hard to know what’s absolutely essential to have in your kit, especially when you’re first starting out. But don’t worry, I’m here to guide you in this blog post on my 10 must-have gardening tools and supplies, so you know what you should prioritize when building your garden tool kit!
It goes without saying that you need some high-quality pieces to wear in the garden that you also don’t mind getting a little dirty! My personal favourite workwear is from the Freshley Overalls from Dovetail Workwear!
If you’re going to be harvesting food & herbs from your garden, your new best friend is going to be the Joey Apron from Roo Gardening. It allows you to harvest quickly, while keeping hands free, and you don’t need to lug a basket around the garden as you snip and harvest!
Your hands without a doubt will get dry, and sore while handling various tools, digging in the soil and harvesting from your garden – enter the Hand & Body Balm from Mint Cleaning! I always have this balm nearby for when my hands start to feel sore and dry in the garden.
The tool that does almost everything! Whether you’re harvesting, planting or digging up plants at the end of the season, having a hori hori knife on hand is a must. It makes everything just that much easier! Cutting through broccoli stems? Simple! Trying to yank a well-rooted plant out of the ground? Like cutting through butter.
Absolutely no one enjoys getting blisters, especially while you’re trying to maintain your garden! I’m a huge fan of Pact Apparel’s Socks as they keep my feet comfortable while in my work boots, and are made sustainable materials!
I feel confident saying there is no better pruners out there than Felco pruners! These are the only brand of pruners that I keep in my gardening tool kit – they’ve never let me down.
A pair of comfortable, high-quality work boots are essential while in the garden. You’ll want something durable, breathable and easy to take on-and-off. My personal favourites are the Vegan Blundstones!
In this house, we only rock Watson Gardening gloves! They are durable, comfortable and high-quality meaning they will last you season after season. They have a wide selection of patterns and colours, available in both men & women’s sizes.
I am without a doubt not the first person to say this, nor will I be the last, but you must protect yourself from the sun when you’re in the garden! In addition to making sure you’ve got sunscreen on (and you’re reapplying every 2 hours!), having a lightweight straw hat will protect your scalp, face and neck from the sun while you’re working in your garden.
Even if you have irrigation in your garden, sometimes there’s just nothing better than walking through your garden with a cup of coffee, watering the fruits of your labour. My favourite is this kettle shaped watering can from Hauser.
Honourable mention goes to my Lee Valley garden tote that carries around all of my essential gardening tools & supplies! Two tools that are not on the list are a simple trowel and cultivator as seen in the photo above. Those are the FIRST tools you probably have, if not, it’s time to get one as they come in handy!
