Healthy Toddler Bedroom Refresh
It’s been two years since we moved to our new home and we finally finished our son’s room. It takes time to acquire items slowly and more sustainably. We enjoy having a blank slate for the walls (our walls are Simply White, and our ceilings are Swiss Coffee, both by Benjamin Moore) as it allows us to be creative within the space. We enjoy neutral tones but we asked Quinn want he wanted to add and we love what he wanted for his space. Keep scrolling to see how the room came to life!
Bed Frame + Side Table
Firstly, we did invest in a bed frame when he was 2 and a half, and was out of his crib. We chose a double frame as we didn’t want to have to buy multiple beds to grow with him over the years. We invested in a bed frame & night stand from West Elm. Unfortunately, the bed frame isn’t available anymore, but I’ve linked some similar options here:
Bedding
We have been huge fans of Obasan for years and our primary room is an Obasan mattress as well (see our reveal here). It’s the healthiest mattress on the market in my opinion. They're handcrafted in Canada from GOTS and GOLS certified organic latex, cotton and wool. That means: no off-gassing, no chemicals, no flame retardants and no junky synthetic foams. The packaging is paper and in cardboard only, no plastic and you can use it right away as there’s no smell – the way a mattress should be. The certified organic latex rubber pillow is perfect for Quinn (he had outgrown their toddler pillows) and we could even embroider his name on it. Lastly, if you’re in need of a mattress protector, and want to steer away from plastics and harmful chemicals but your child still has accidents, then you will want to look at Obasan’s wool pad protector, It is made from 100% pure organic wool which naturally repels liquids and easy to remove and wash.
Rug
Did you know a rug can be the most toxic item in a room? A healthy rug should not be overlooked in a child’s room, or any room for that matter. Children’s skin and faces are touching and rubbing against the rug, knowing it’s safe was a priority for us. We chose a 100% wool rug from Rugs by Roo who offers many rugs that are non-toxic and no nasty chemicals. It is 100% wool, hand woven and ethically made, learn more about the rug here. When you choose wool it’s a thicker and cozier rug than cotton. We also added an the Lorena Canals Nomad Sistan decorative pillow for the bed from Rugs by Roo. Made from natural materials & dyes, handmade and machine washable!
Desk
Quinn asked for a desk in his room since he started school. I thought a desk would just sit there and never be used but I’m pleasantly surprised that I was wrong! It’s very special to him and we are very happy with this GREENGUARD Gold Certified desk from Crate and Barrel (with the hutch added), as well as the matching chair. It was fun decorating his desk with lego that his dad used to build with. It’s also fun to have an area to display his favourite items and pencils in his room.
Decor
Picture frames are from Opposite Wall and we actually have a few of their frames around our home because they are a more sustainable option for frames! The oak frames that we have featured in our home are sustainably sourced, and FSC certified making them a healthier option for your home. Use code THEPURPOSEFULYOU to save 5% extra on posters/planners applicable on Black Friday promotions for up to 55% using my code until December 9th. In the frames, Quinn requested rockets so we found neutral and inspiring rocket prints on Etsy. The banner bunting garland is from Fancy Little Day. We actually bring it out for every birthday party too so it plays as a dual purpose.
We also loved this lamp from Crate and Barrel that we got for his bed side table. The highlight of this piece is the natural look of the lamp shade since it’s made from natural raffia, and perfectly compliments the natural seagrass pendant light that hangs in the room. And of course, I can’t forget to share about this wooden bookshelf. Unfortunately, the exact one that we purchased is no longer available, but I found this very similar one (plus, there’s options for how many you want to order, as well as length!).
And there you have it – all of Quinn’s room reveal! It certainly has been a labour of love, and we’re so excited to have his room all wrapped up, and he has been loving it. If you’re wondering how you can make your home healthier (no matter what space you’re looking to spruce up), I hope this blog can serve as inspiration for you that it can be done!
