10 EASY Things To Do This Earth Month

Check out my Garden E-Book!

Did you know I wrote an e-book? It’s perfect for beginner gardeners in their first 3 years of gardening. Check it out and purchase my e-book here!

Happy Earth Month! My guess is that if you’re reading this blog, you probably already care a lot about doing your part to help the planet and are aware of why that is important. No matter where you’re at on your sustainable journey, I’m so glad you’re here! The Purposeful You is a place for everyone to get inspired to make a difference, one step at a time.

As I’m sure you agree, caring about the environment is an every month commitment, but I still always look forward to celebrating Earth Month in April. It’s a great opportunity to spread awareness about sustainable lifestyle choices and to build motivation so that we can carry that energy into the rest of the year.

Today I’m sharing 10 achievable ways to show up for Planet Earth, as a resource for you and anyone you know who might be interested. But this is far from a comprehensive list — I encourage you to share your tips, too! The more we share our ideas and experiences with others, the greater a ripple effect we can create — by living our values, we can inspire others to do the same.

With that, let’s get into the blog!

1. When you’re taking a shower, put a bucket beneath your showerhead or faucet while you wait for the water to warm up. Use the water for your garden or indoor plants!

2. Keep the lights off when it’s bright outside whether that’s for five minutes, an hour or all day — you save money, too!

3. Plant a flower that the pollinators love (bonus points for native flowers)— try planting lavender, sunflowers, daisies, rudbeckia, snapdragons, borage, zinnias and so much more.

4. Go for a walk and pick up 10 pieces of garbage.

5. Unplug a small appliance when not in use (it uses energy even when it’s not on).

6. Find an email address or phone number for your local, provincial or federal representative. Contact them and tell them why sustainability is important to you as a voter!

7. Purchase a clothing item secondhand instead of new. Try to hold onto your clothes for longer, too. When you’re ready to let go of them, you could plan a clothing swap with your friends! Let’s work together to keep more textiles out of the landfill.

8. Help reduce energy by hanging one load of laundry to dry.

9. Donate what you can to an environmental organization or cause close to your heart. Some national programs in Canada you might be interested in are the Nature Conservancy of Canada, Planet in Focus, Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society and the IPCA Innovation Program under MakeWay — just a few options! You might also want to research smaller charities that are local to you.

10. Make one sustainable swap. Change takes time, so start small and add on when you’re ready — way more manageable! Check out my top 15 sustainable swaps here.

One more thought for you — as you go about taking all of these eco-friendly actions, don’t lose sight of why you’re doing them. Not just the doom and gloomy reasons, but also remembering what you love about the planet. This Earth Month, I hope you can spend lots of time appreciating nature. Go for a bike ride, explore a new trail, listen to the sounds of the natural environment…whatever you most enjoy outdoors! If you have kids, maybe this is your chance to open a conversation with them about environmental stewardship. The more we reconnect with the earth, the more we will remember that it gives us everything — and do everything we can.

As always, thanks for reading, and please feel free to comment below with your thoughts!
